Hybrid Spectroscopy

The combination of single volume spectroscopy and chemical shift imaging. The chemical shift measurement is performed over a selectively-excited volume of interest. Areas with strong distorting signal are not stimulated and therefore do not append signal to the spectra.

See also Hybrid Imaging.

In Phase Image

The term in phase refers to an image in which the signals from two spectral components (such as fat and water) add constructively in a voxel. T1 weighted in phase images are acquired by a gradient echo-based technique with a short TR, TE and a high flip angle greater than 60 degrees. To some degree, in phase sequences are more sensitive to detection of focal hepatic lesions than out of phase for evaluating reduced lesion-to-liver contrast, but the choice for a T1 gradient echo sequence is still based on field strength, advanced imaging techniques (breath hold imaging), and physician preference.

Localized Magnetic Resonance

(LMR) A particular technique for obtaining NMR spectra, for example, of phosphorus, from a limited region by creating a sensitive volume with inhomogeneous applied gradient magnetic fields, which may be enhanced with the use of surface coils.

Quick Overview
Artifact Information
NAME
Magic angle
DESCRIPTION
Increase of the T2 time, bright signal in tendons
REASON
Angle about 55° to the main magnetic field
HELP
Angle not about 55°
The magic angle is a precisely defined angle, the value is approximately 54.7°. Hence, two nuclei with a dipolar coupling vector at an angle of approximately 54.7° to a strong external magnetic field have zero dipolar coupling.
Magic angle spinning is a technique in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, which employs this principle to remove or reduce dipolar couplings, thereby increasing spectral resolution. In MRI, the magic angle effect visualizes as bright spots through an increased T2 time on short echo time (TE) images, for e.g. collagen fibers of tendons and ligaments, which are oriented at the magic angle of approximately 54.7° to the magnetic field.

Image Guidance
Take care that tendons and ligaments are not oriented at about a 54.7° angle to the main magnetic field.
