Often used to indicate an image where most of the contrast between tissues or tissue states is due to differences in tissue T2 created typically by using longer TE and TR times.
This term may be misleading in that the potentially important effects of tissue density differences and the range of tissue T2 values are often ignored.
Choosing the machine parameters such that TR greater than T1 (typically greater than 2 000 ms) and TE less than T2 (typically greater than 100 ms) and noting that (1-exp(-TR/T1) = 1 for TR/T1 much greater than 1, will reduce Eq. 1 to the expression
Mxy = Mxy0exp(-TE/T2)
which is dependent on T2 only, hence the term T2 weighting. Therefore T2 weighted image contrast state is approached by imaging with a TR long compared to tissue T1 (to reduce T1 contribution to image contrast) and a TE between the longest and shortest tissue T2s of interest. A TR greater than 3 times the longest T1 is required for the T1 effect to be less than 5%. Due to the wide range of T1 and T2 and tissue density values that can be found in the body, an image that is T2 weighted for some tissues may not be so for others.
See also T2 Time.
Lesions with short T2 are (dark in T2 weighted sequences):
acute haemorrhage (deoxyHb)
haemosiderin
physiologic iron (basal ganglia, etc.)
mucinous lesions.

(PDWI) In density weighted imaging, the contrast is dependent on the density of protons in the tissue. Proton density weighted images are generated by choosing TR greater than T1 (typically ≥ 2 000 ms) and TE less than T2 (typically ≤ 30 ms), the two exponential terms are both close to one and therefore M is relatively independent of T1 and T2, thereby emphasizing Mxy0, which is proportional to the proton density. Also called (Rho) ρ-weighted.

In fast imaging sequences driven equilibrium sensitizes the sequence to variations in T2. This MRI technique turns transverse magnetization Mxy to the longitudinal axis using a pulse rather than waiting for T1 relaxation.
The first two pulses form a spin echo and, at the peak of the echo, a second 90° pulse returns the magnetization to the z-axis in preparation for a fresh sequence. In the absence of T2 relaxation, then all the magnetization can be returned to the z-axis. Otherwise, T2 signal loss during the sequence will reduce the final z-magnetization.
The advantage of this sequence type is, that both longitudinal and also transverse magnetization are back to equilibrium in a shorter amount of time. Therefore, contrast and signal can be increased while using a shorter TR. This pulse type can be applied to other sequences like FSE, GE or IR.

Isochromat

A microscopic group of spins, which resonate at the same frequency. The spin precesses around a circle in the xy-plane and the net magnetization is the length, amplitude or magnitude of the magnetization vector Mxy: the quantity normally represented on a pixel-by-pixel basis in a MR image (thus amplitude or magnitude image).

On October 19, 2001, Philips Medical Systems completed an acquisition strategy through its purchase of Marconi Medical Systems.

The History of Marconi Medical Systems
2001 Royal Philips Electronics and Marconi plc announced that Philips has agreed to acquire Marconi Medical Systems for $1.1 billion.
2000 Marconi introduces Infinite Detector Technology for Mx8000 multislice CT scanner, which acquires an unprecedented 16 simultaneous slices with sub-millimeter isotropic accuracy.
1999 At RSNA, Picker International unveils the new Marconi Medical Systems name and corporate vision.
1998 Picker International acquires the Computed Tomography Division of Elscint Ltd, immediately positioning Picker at the forefront of major global CT suppliers.
1986 Picker produces the industry's first 1.0T MR imager.
1981 Picker is sold to General Electric Co. Ltd. of England (GEC). Picker merged with Cambridge Instruments, GEC Medical, and American Optical to form Picker International.
1967 The name changed from Picker X-ray to Picker Corporation. Picker acquired Dunlee.
1946 The Dunlee Corporation started in Chicago by Dunmore Dunk and Zed. J. Atlee to meet demand for quality X-ray tubes and special purpose tubes.
1915 James Picker Company formed in New York City offering sales and service of X-ray equipment, film and accessories.
