Tuning
 
The process of adjusting the transmitter and receiver circuitry so that it provides optimal signal performance at the Larmor frequency. A properly tuned scanner will produce images with a higher signal to noise ratio, and therefore improved diagnostic versatility.
More generally, tuning is the process of adjusting the components for optimal performance, including matching impedances.

Autotuning
 
A means for optimizing the tuning and matching of RF coils under different loading conditions without operator intervention. For large high-power coils such as body coils, autotuning involves the adjustment of variable capacitors using electric or hydraulic motors. For low power coils, the tuning elements are most often variable capacitance diodes (varactors) fed by a computer-generated variable voltage.

Uneven intensity or brightness may occasionally be noted on high field MRI e.g. of the brain. There are various causes of localized inhomogeneous brightness across the MRI images such as improper tuning of the RF transceiver, unbalanced deposition of the RF energy due to incorrect geometry and localized attenuation due to positioning or anatomical variants.

1) The specific irradiation designed to remove the multiple structure in a particular resonance due to spin spin coupling with other nuclei;
2) The preventing of the interaction by mutual inductive coupling of two (or more) resonant RF coils, e.g. by detuning coils not in use at a particular point in time. Decoupling can take the form of active decoupling where an externally controlled switching circuit is used to detune the non-selected coils or passive decoupling where RF energy from the transmitter pulse is used to switch diodes to detune the appropriate coil.

Resonance
 
The exchange of energy at a particular frequency between two systems; a large amplitude vibration in a mechanical or electrical system caused by a relatively small periodic stimulus with a frequency at or close to a natural frequency of the system.
Resonance is referred to as the property of an atom to absorb energy only at the Larmor frequency. The energy must also be delivered at 90° to the net magnetic vector (NMV) and main magnetic field (B0). Otherwise, no energy will be absorbed, resonance will not have occurred and an image cannot be created. In MRI systems, resonance can refer to the MR itself or to the tuning of the RF circuitry.
