Back Projection Imaging
 
This imaging technique is probably the earliest, but rarely used today. Most of today's imaging techniques are based on the Fourier transform, and fill the Cartesian grid of points in k-space line by line by a sequence of applied gradients. Back projection imaging performs a radial filling of the k-space by a one dimensional field gradient, applied at different angles. Back projection imaging is still in use in laser polarized noble gas imaging (see ventilation agents and lung imaging).

(MSI) The combination of biomagnetic field detection and MR imaging into a merged data set. Most applications of MSI involve the combined use of MRI and measurement of magnetic fields created by electric currents in the brain, so-called magnetoencephalography MEG.
MEG allows calculation of the source of the measured biomagnetic fields, and thereby localization of many regional brain functions, such as mapping of the sensorimotor, auditory and visual cortex and also localization of epileptogenic foci. The MEG coordinate system is defined by anatomical landmarks, which are easily identified also with MRI, making it possible to align the 3D MEG data with the 3D MR image data. The resulting magnetic source images show the spatial relationships between the functional area provided by MEG and the neighboring anatomy and pathology, both provided by MRI.
Cardiac applications of MSI are also being explored. The electric currents in the myocardium create extrathoracic magnetic fields and the source of these fields may be calculated by the same principles as those used in MEG. Possible cardiac applications include mapping of arrhythmogenic sites prior to ablation therapy.

Partial Fourier Imaging
 
Reconstruction of an image from a MR data set comprising an asymmetric sampling of k-space. For example, it can be used either to shorten image acquisition time, by reducing the number of phase encoding steps required, or to shorten the echo time, TE, by moving the echo off-center in the acquisition window. In either case the signal to noise ratio is reduced and the resolution can be improved to correspond to the maximum available resolution in the data.

Sequential Line Imaging
 
MR imaging techniques in which the image is built up from successive lines through the object. In various schemes, the lines are isolated by oscillating magnetic field gradients or selective excitation, and then the NMR signals from the selected line are encoded for position by detecting the FID or spin echo in the presence of a magnetic field gradient along the line; the Fourier transformation of the detected signal then yields the distribution of emitted NMR signal along the line.

(PDWI) In density weighted imaging, the contrast is dependent on the density of protons in the tissue. Proton density weighted images are generated by choosing TR greater than T1 (typically ≥ 2 000 ms) and TE less than T2 (typically ≤ 30 ms), the two exponential terms are both close to one and therefore M is relatively independent of T1 and T2, thereby emphasizing Mxy0, which is proportional to the proton density. Also called (Rho) ρ-weighted.
