An imaging artifact is an extraneous density or abnormal variation in density on the image that is not due to the structure of the patient. There are many artifacts in ultrasound imaging; some are useful and desirable while others are a bother. Examples of both are shown here. Examples included in this case are shadowing, enhancement, slice thickness, reverberation, and mirror image artifacts.
