In contrast enhanced ultrasound, the focus is the point at which maximum bubble destruction occur.
The transmit focus is the region on the axis of an ultrasound beam where the width of the beam has a minimum value. All waves crossing the focus are in phase in relation to the transducer surface or to the electronic summing point of an electronically focused array.

Sonography of the gallbladder is a reliable technique for diagnosing e.g., gallstones, cholecystitis, tumors, polyps, or ductal obstruction. Patient should be examined with empty stomach and on a low fat diet the night before. Barium studies, endoscopy, ERCP, colonoscopy, and abdominal CT should be performed after this examination.
Gallbladder ultrasound is best performed with a 5 MHz curved array or a linear array transducer in cases of a very superficial gallbladder. In obese patients or in patients with difficult sonographic access, a 3.5 MHz sector or curved linear transducer is advantageous.
Gallbladder and biliary tree are usually imaged in supine and posterior oblique (LPO) positions. Sometimes very small gallstones are better visible in upright and prone position.

The dimension of the ultrasound beam and the transducer array are the origin of grating-lobe artifacts (also called side lobe artifact). Grating lobes as side lobes are off-axis secondary ultrasound beams projecting at predictable angles to the main lobe. Side lobes are too small to produce important artifacts.

A handle or probe contains the transducer elements and is attached to the system via a relatively long coaxial cable. Handles are selected via high voltage (HV) relays. In most ultrasound machines, several different handles are available to be connected to the system, allowing the operator to select the appropriate transducer for optimal imaging.

Harmonic imaging relies on detection of harmonics of the transmitted frequency produced by bubble oscillation. This method is widely available on ultrasound scanners and uses the same array transducers as conventional imaging. A major limitation of the use of ultrasound contrast agents is the problem that signals from the microbubbles are mixed with those from tissue. Echoes from solid tissue and red blood cells are suppressed by harmonic imaging.
In harmonic mode, the system transmits at one frequency, but is tuned to receive echoes preferentially at double that frequency, and the second harmonic echoes from the place of the bubble. Typically, the transmit frequency lies between 1.5 and 3 MHz and the receive frequency is selected by means of a bandpass filter whose center frequency lies between 3 and 6 MHz.
Color Doppler and real-time harmonic spectral Doppler modes have also been implemented and show a level of tissue motion suppression not available in conventional modes.
