The ultrasound scanner should be started to warm up for 5 minutes before scanning. Transducers should be selected depending upon the exam type, as well as the body size, weight and habitus of the patient, before starting the exam. In addition, the power settings and techniques should be checked.
An adequate amount of an acoustic couplant such as warmed scanning gel must be placed on the skin or probe. Gel couplant assures maximum transmission of the sound beam by eliminating air interfaces.
All transducers should be cleaned and available for use for each patient. Although endocavitary ultrasound probes might be considered even less critical instruments because they are routinely protected by single use disposable probe covers. For maximum safety, a high-level disinfection of the probe between each use and the use of a probe cover as an aid to keeping the probe clean, should be performed.
