Vector
 
A vector is a quantity characterized by a magnitude (in mathematics a number, in physics a number times a unit) and a direction (and a point of application), often represented graphically by an arrow. The length of the line segment represents the magnitude, and its orientation in space represents its direction. Vector quantities can be added to or subtracted from one another. Used in MRI to describe forces, e.g. magnetic moment, spin, magnetization etc.

Net Magnetization Vector
 
Hydrogen nuclei magnetic moments are randomly oriented in the absence of an external magnetic field and are considered to have a net magnetization of zero. Once hydrogen protons are placed in the presence of an external magnetic field, they align themselves in one of two directions, parallel or anti parallel to the net magnetic field, which is commonly referred to as the vector B0. The parallel and anti parallel protons cancel each other out, only the small number of low energy protons left aligned with the magnetic field create the overall net magnetization, this difference is all that counts. The magnetic moments of these protons are added together and are referred to as net magnetization vector (NMV) or the symbol 'M'.

Angular Momentum
 
A vector quantity given by the vector product of the momentum of a particle and its position vector. In the absence of external forces, the angular momentum remains constant, with the result that any rotating body tends to maintain the same axis of rotation. In the presence of torque applied to a rotating body in such a way as to change the direction of the rotation axis, the resulting change in angular momentum results in precession. Atomic nuclei possess an intrinsic angular momentum referred to as spin, measured in multiples of Planck's constant.
