Angiography means the imaging of veins and arteries. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has a lower invasion than conventional angiography with catheter and X-ray contrast agent. Time of flight angiography (inflow) and phase contrast angiography works without contrast agents. Only in contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography is the use of contrast agents necessary, but the lack of side effects is an advantage of MRI contrast agents, just as the smaller dosage as used in X-ray angiography techniques.

An array coil combines the advantages of smaller coils (high SNR) with those of larger coils (large measurement field). This type of RF coil is composed of separate multiple smaller coils, which can be used individually (switchable coil) or combined.
When used simultaneously, the elements can either be:
coupled array coils - electrically coupled to each other through common transmission lines or mutual inductance
isolated array coils - electrically isolated from each other with separate transmission lines and receivers and minimum effective mutual inductance, and with the signals from each transmission line processed independently or at different frequencies
phased array coils - multiple small coils arranged to efficiently cover a specific anatomic region and obtain high-resolution, high-SNR images of a larger volume. The data from the individual coils is integrated by special software to produce the high-resolution images.

Arrhythmia Rejection

With this method irregular RR intervals in cardiac gating during cardiovascular imaging are rejected and then repeated to improve the image quality, whereby the cardiac frequency is used as a basis of the normal heart rate.
The RR interval window determines the percentage variation of the heart rate. Variations of the acquired data outside the window are rejected and not used in the image reconstruction. Also one interval after the arrhytmic beat will be rejected.
Arrhythmia rejection may be inappropriate for patients with certain pathologies, because if the RR interval is constant long, short, long, - all intervals would be rejected. Also a disadvantage is the time consume, but in some cases this function is mandatory, e.g. for diverse retrospective triggered sequences.

Bolus Injection

A bolus is a rapid infusion of high dose contrast agent. Dynamic and accumulation phase imaging can be performed after bolus injection. Since the transit time of the bolus through the tissue is only a few seconds, high temporal resolution imaging can be required to obtain sequential images during the wash in and wash out of the contrast material and, therefore, resolve the first pass of the tracer.
For the same injected dose of contrast agent the injection rate (and, consequently, the total injected volume) modifies the bolus peak profile. Increasing the injection rate produces a sharpening of the peak (Cmax increase, Tmax decrease, peak length decrease). At a low injection rate, the first pass presents a plateau form. Substantial changes in the gadolinium concentrations during signal acquisition induce artifacts. Furthermore, the haemodynamic parameters (cardiac output, blood pressure) influence the bolus profile. The characteristics of gadolinium agents are favorable in the early bolus phase, whereas the advantages of large complexes (e.g. blood pool agents) and ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) are most evident in the distribution phase.

CMC 001

Short name: CMC 001, central moiety: Mn2+
CMC 001 is an orally administered MRI contrast agent in development for enhancement of the liver, bile ducts and gastrointestinal tract. Applications are screening of liver tumors/metastases, imaging of the biliary tract and it could be suitable for liver function studies by following the metabolism and excretion of manganese in the liver cells. Several advantages like better images, higher safety, lower costs and less inconvenience for the patient can be expected.
Animal experiments and clinical studies in humans Phase I and Phase II A, have shown excellent contrast enhancing properties with only minimal adverse effects. CMC 001 is under development by the Medicon Valley based CMC Contrast AB to receive a cost effective, safe and highly diagnostic MR contrast medium for abdominal MR imaging. Clinical studies in Phase III are started.
