Filtering is any process that alters the relative frequency content. This can be done with an analog (conventional electrical) filter, e.g. to remove higher frequency components so as to avoid aliasing in digitizing. Filtering can be carried out numerically on the digitized data. Raw data can be filtered prior to the image calculation. The Hanning filter is provided with various weightings, e.g. for the reduction of edge oscillation.

Gibbs Phenomenon

In mathematics, the Gibbs phenomenon (also known as ringing artifacts, named after the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs) is the peculiar manner in which the Fourier series of a piecewise continuously differentiable periodic function f behaves at a jump discontinuity: the nth partial sum of the Fourier series has large oscillations near the jump, which might increase the maximum of the partial sum above that of the function itself. The overshoot does not die out as the frequency increases, but approaches a finite limit.
In MRI, artifactual ripples parallel to abrupt and intense changes are caused by the Fourier transformation.

See Gibbs Artifact, Truncation Artifact, Ringing Artifact Reduction.

Hertz

(Hz) The standard SI unit of frequency.
Definition: The number of repetitions of a periodic process per unit time. It is equal to the old unit cycles or oscillations each second of a simple harmonic motion. The unit is named for the German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz.
Larger units are
kilohertz (kHz) = 1 000 Hz
megahertz (MHz) = 1 000 kHz
gigahertz (GHz) = 1 000 MHz
