The basis of T1 weighted imaging is the longitudinal relaxation. A T1 weighted magnetic resonance image is created typically by using short TE and TR times.
The final image is a reflection of more than one of these pulse sequence parameters, weighted according to the type of sequence and its timing. T1 signals determine predominantly the contrast and brightness in this type of images but proton density will always contribute to the image intensity. The T1 dependence is mainly determined by the repetition time or any pre-pulses (such as in an inversion recovery pulse sequence).
Due to the larger longitudinal and transverse magnetization, fat has a higher signal and will appear bright on a T1 contrast MR image. Conversely, water has less longitudinal magnetization prior to a RF pulse, therefore less transverse magnetization after a RF pulse yielding low signal appearing dark on a T1 contrast image. Often, a paramagnetic contrast agent, a gadolinium compound, is administered, and both pre-contrast T1 weighted images and post-contrast T1 weighted images are obtained.

(TurboFLASH) This FLASH-based sequence use an inversion pulse followed by a low flip angle and short TR gradient echo train. This gradient echo technique forms complete images in times short compared to T1. Images obtained in this way have very little intrinsic contrast, maintaining adequate signal requires that losses (and therefore contrast).

www.canamglobal.com/mri/virgomri.html From Millennium Technology Inc. This open C-shaped MRI system eases patient comfort and technologist maneuverability. This low cost scanner is build for a wide range of applications. The Virgo™ patient table is detachable and moves on easy rolling castors. Able to accommodate patient weights up to 160 kg, the tabletop has a range of motion of 30 cm in the lateral direction and 90cm in the longitudinal direction. Images generated with this scanner can only be viewed (without data loss) on Millennium's proprietary viewing software.

Volume Selective Excitation

The selective excitation of spins in only a limited region of space. This can be particularly useful for spectroscopy as well as imaging. Spatial localization of the signal source may be achieved through spatially selective excitation and the resulting signal may be analyzed directly for the spectrum corresponding to the excited region. It is usually achieved with selective excitation.
Typically, a single dimension of localization can be achieved with one selective RF excitation pulse (and a magnetic field gradient along a desired direction), while a localized volume (3D) can be excited with a stimulated echo produced with three selective RF pulses whose selective magnetic field gradients are mutually orthogonal, having a common intersection in the desired region. Similar 'crossed plane' excitation can be used with selective 180° refocusing pulses and conventional spin echoes.
A degree of spatial localization of excitation can alternatively be achieved with depth pulses, e.g. when using surface coils for excitation as well as signal detection. An indirect application of selective excitation for volume-selected spectroscopy is to use appropriate combinations of signals acquired after selective inversion of different regions, in order to subtract away the signal from undesired regions.
