Partial Flip Angle

(PFI) A flip angle of less than 90° only partially converts the z-magnetization, leaving a fraction cos a along the longitudinal direction. A flip angle of 90° converts all the z-magnetization into xy-magnetization.
When the repetition time is shorter than T1, the use of a partial flip angle can lead to higher signal intensity. The maximum signal intensity is given by the Ernst angle. For spin echo pulse sequences using an odd number of 180° pulses, an effect similar to the use of a partial flip angle is obtained by using a flip angle greater than 90° to offset the inversion of the remaining longitudinal magnetization by the 180° pulse.

Postprocessing

MR images can be manipulated for evaluation in various ways. Postprocessing includes: Subtraction, addition, rotation, inversion, multiplanar reconstruction (MPR), maximum intensity projection (MIP), etc.
Subtraction is particularly useful in contrast enhanced MRI examinations (for example breast MRI, brain MRI). The pre contrast images are subtracted from the images after an injection of contrast agents (sometimes also called dye) for a better tumor detection.

Prepulse

Prepulses are prior to the excitation. To optimize, this is usually as short as possible. The time from the prepulse to the center of K-space (K0) is the prepulse delay time, also known as the inversion time (TI). Prepulses are more effective if the flip angle is kept as short as possible to values such as 10 to 30 ms.

Pulse, 180°

RF pulse designed to rotate the macroscopic magnetization vector 180° in space as referred to the rotating frame of reference, usually about an axis at right angles to the main magnetic field. If the spins are initially aligned with the magnetic field, this pulse will produce inversion. Also called P Pulse.
