Motion Probing Gradient
 
Many MR imaging techniques using Motion Probing Gradients (MPG's) such as Spin Echo (SE), Stimulated Echo (STE), Rapid Acquisition with Relaxation Enhancement (RARE), Turbo-SE, and SE-EPI (Echo Planar Imaging for Spin echo acquisition), Spiral imaging, and Projection reconstruction including PROPELLER are applicable to DWI. In diffusion weighted imaging, 2 MPG's are required. The MPG's are put symmetrically into both sides of a 180° or 90° RF pulse to change the direction of the magnetized spin in the X-Y plane for spin echo or stimulated echo acquisition.

Phase Encoding Gradient
 
(Gφ) The phase encoding gradient is a magnetic field gradient that allows the encoding of the spatial signal location along a second dimension by different spin phases. The phase encoding gradient is applied after slice selection and excitation (before the frequency encoding gradient), orthogonally to the other two gradients. The spatial resolution is directly related to the number of phase encoding steps (gradients).

Current-carrying gradient coils with reduced gradient fringe field inside of the magnet cryostat structures like cryoshields and He-vessel. The shielding can be accomplished by secondary actively driven coils or by passive screens, which are inductively coupled to the gradient coils. In both cases eddy currents outside of the gradient system will be reduced.

(TGSE / TurboGSE) A sequence with a combination of Gradient and Spin Echo Imaging. Additional gradient echoes are generated before and after each spin echo. The spin echoes are allocated to the center of the raw data matrix to give pure T2 contrast. The gradient echoes primarily determine the image resolution. If multiple image lines are obtained during a single echo, the imaging pulse sequence type is a TGSE pulse sequence. This sequence is very fast, fat is darker and more sensitive to susceptibility effects. Also called GRASE.

(GEMS) This pulse sequence uses a changeable flip angle instead of a 90° pulse and a gradient instead of a RF pulse to rephase the FID.
T2*, T1 weighted and proton density images can be acquired. The flip angle in combination with the TR determines the T1 weighting and the TE controls the amount of dephasing. To minimize T2* the echo time should be short.
