An RF array coil consisting of 2 - 6 several separately resonant elements, 2 or more of which can be selected as the receiver coil at a particular time. Coils not in use are decoupled. The spatial information related to the coils of a receiver array are utilized, reference images are required, obtained with each array element and with a body coil. Fast parallel imaging techniques using surface multicoils, such as sensitivity encoding (SENSE) or simultaneous acquisition of spatial harmonics (SMASH), have recently raised interest in the field of MR imaging.

Sensitive Plane

Technique of selecting a plane for sequential plane imaging by using an oscillating magnetic field gradient and filtering out the corresponding time dependent part of the NMR signal. The gradient used, is at right angles to the desired plane and the magnitude of the oscillating magnetic field gradient is equal to zero only in the desired plane.

Sensitive Point

The sensitive point in an object (or a region) is the point from which information is being measured, as in sequential point imaging or in single voxel MR spectroscopy sequential point imaging used. To define a sensitive point, it must be selected in three dimensions. Different combinations of selective excitation, inversion, or saturation pulses can be used. Sometimes, combinations of two or more measurements are necessary to define the sensitive point (or volume).

Sensitive Volume

Region of the object from which NMR signal will preferentially be acquired because of strong magnetic field inhomogeneity elsewhere. Effect can be enhanced by use of a shaped RF field that is strongest in the sensitive region.
