The MRI equipment consists of following components:
The magnet generates the magnetic field.
Shim coils make the magnetic field homogeneous.
Radio frequency coils transmit the radio signal into the body part being imaged.
Receiver coils detect the returning radio signals.
Gradient coils provide spatial localization of the signals.
Shielding coils produce a magnetic field that cancels the field from primary coils in regions where it is not desired.
The computer reconstructs the signals into the image.
The MRI scanner room is shielded by a faraday shield.
Different cooling systems cool the magnet, the scanner room and the technique room.

Better MRI equipment and software design along with the latest information technology improves system maintenance and overall communication. Software and digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) compatibility allows to network into hospital databases, helps to modify pulse sequences, data post processing, and archiving via picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

Correction of inhomogeneity of the magnetic field produced by the main magnet of a MRI system due to imperfections in the magnet or to the presence of external ferromagnetic objects. May involve changing the configuration of the magnet or the using of shim coils (active shimming) or adding or removing steel from the magnets poles (passive shimming) to fine-tune the magnetic field.

in October of 2004, the company changed the product name of the Stand-Up™ MRI to the Upright™ MRI. The Indomitable™, Upright™ MRI is the only open MRI in the world that can perform positional MRI (pMRI), i.e. the Upright MRI™ scans patients in upright, weight-bearing positions, in addition to the conventional lie-down positions. The Upright™ MRI is the only device that can scan patients in the position their symptoms occur, in their position of pain. In early clinical reports independently confirm the effectiveness and potential of positional MRI. In October 2000, Fonar received permission to market the Indomitable™ from the FDA.

www.gehealthcare.com/usen/mr/index.html From GE Healthcare;
The Signa SP 0.5T™ is an open MRI magnet that is designed for use in interventional radiology and intra-operative imaging. The vertical gap configuration increases patient positioning options, improves patient observation, and allows continuous access to the patient during imaging. The magnet enclosure also incorporates an intercom, patient observation video camera, laser patient alignment lights, and task lighting in the imaging volume.

www.hitachimed.com/products/altaire.asp From Hitachi Medical Systems America, Inc.;
the AIRIS made its debut in 1995. Hitachi followed up with the AIRIS II system, which has proven equally successfully. 'All told, Hitachi has installed more than 1,000 MRI systems in the U.S., holding more than 17 percent of the total U.S. MRI installed base, and more than half of the installed base of open MR systems,' says Antonio Garcia, Frost and Sullivan industry research analyst. Now Altaire employs a blend of innovative Hitachi features called VOSI™ technology, optimizing each sub-system's performance in concert with the other sub-systems, to give the seamless mix of high-field performance and the patient comfort, especially for claustrophobic patients, of open MR systems.
