Types of oral contrast agents with positive signal enhancement:
Combinations of these

Ideal oral contrast agents are immiscible with water, biologically inert, have a low viscosity and surface tension. Oral positive contrast agents may improve the separation of bowel loops, the detection of polyps in colon MRI or the assessment of inflammatory bowel in the small intestine. Several positive oral contrast agents are available and they are safe to use, for example gadolinium solution, ferric ammonium citrate, different oil emulsions and pediatric formula.
Unfavorably motion artifacts caused by respiration and peristalsis may be increased in MR imaging. In addition, the signal of the positive contrast medium may decrease caused by dilution in gastrointestinal (GI) secretions. With the use of contrast agents that are immiscible with water, no dilution and accompanying signal loss occur even when the contrast agent is in contact with the intraluminal contents of the GI tract. Another disadvantage may be residual substances in the bowel, resembling masses when enclosed by bright signal. In addition, positive contrast agents may have a similar signal as bright masses, which make their (e.g. lipoma) detection difficult.

Postprocessing

MR images can be manipulated for evaluation in various ways. Postprocessing includes: Subtraction, addition, rotation, inversion, multiplanar reconstruction (MPR), maximum intensity projection (MIP), etc.
Subtraction is particularly useful in contrast enhanced MRI examinations (for example breast MRI, brain MRI). The pre contrast images are subtracted from the images after an injection of contrast agents (sometimes also called dye) for a better tumor detection.

Preamplifier

A device that amplifies very low-level signals. A preamplifier is generally placed close to its signal source and has a very low noise figure as it is the principal determinant of electronic noise within the system. Preamplifiers used in NMR systems usually have a 50 ohm input impedance, and require a matching network to interface to the RF coil, although preamplifiers with high input impedance may be used with surface coils. Such devices typically use a field effect transistor (FET) as their input stage.

When a magnetic moment (e.g. hydrogen nuclei) is placed within an external magnetic field (e.g. B0), it begins to oscillate about the direction of the field; this motion is called precession. The frequency of the precession (Larmor frequency) of the nuclide depends on this particular field strength. A higher field strength results in a higher frequency of the precession.
