Multi Angle Oblique

The multi angle oblique technique gives the ability to display anatomical structures in a variety of planes from the data acquired in just one MRI scan. This technique is useful, for example in lumbar spine MRI obtaining images of each intervertebral disc, individually oriented at a different angle, to better recognize herniation or to compare degenerative changes.
This technique is more difficult in the cervical spine MRI region because of the small vertebra and therefore a short distance between the multi angle oblique planes. In case of too short distance or overlapping slices the crosstalk (artifact) destroys the signal with reduced image quality.

(MC) Multiple 3D Volumes (chunks) joined together in 1 scan. Used for 3D TOF angiography. 3D TOF MRA is acquired with 3D FT slabs or multiple overlapping thin 3D FT slabs depending on the coverage required and the range of flow-velocities under examination.
Also called multiple overlapping thin slab slice acquisition (MOTSA) or multi slab.

(MEDIC) MEDIC is a heavily T2* weighted spoiled gradient echo sequence with multiple echoes. MEDIC uses a series of identically phase encoded gradient echoes, sampled per line in k-space. Unipolar frequency encoding gradients are used to achieve flow compensation and to avoid off resonance effects. For each echo the magnitude images are reconstructed and postprocessed by using a sum of squares algorithm to improve the signal to noise ratio. The increased receiver bandwidth reduces the T2* effects and impairment of the spatial resolution.
The multi echo data image combination sequence is potentially useful in imaging of cartilage in joints.

Multi Echo Imaging

Multi echo imaging sequences use a series of echoes acquired as a train following after a single excitation pulse. Multiple symmetrical or asymmetrical echoes can be acquired, typically T2 weighted. In spin echo imaging, each echo is formed by a 180° pulse, but also a FSE (TSE, RARE) or EPI sequence can be used. As a difference to a normal fast spin echo sequence, in multi echo imaging, separate images are produced from each echo of the train with different T2 weightings. The signal height reduces with transverse relaxation. This drop in signal can be used to calculate a pure T2 image.
